The Year 9’s got the season off to a flying start, remaining unbeaten throughout their six matches, and scoring a massive 67 goals. The girls are now looking forward to representing the area in the County Finals to be held at the K2 leisure centre in Crawley on Monday 29th March 2010.
Bishop Luffa were the only school in the WSW Area to enter A and B teams into both the Year 7 and Year 8 leagues. Following a revised league format, the 8A’s sailed through the ‘Chichester’ pool and were also unbeaten in their matches. The 8B team worked hard in their games to finish in third position at the pool stage.
The 7A’s trained hard to ensure their new team was working well together. This paid off in style as they comprehensively beat Chichester High School for Girls in their first match, 15 – 1, combining brilliant centre court play with some outstanding shooting.
Continuing their form, they went on to beat Manhood comfortably the following week but then came the match against the Bourne. Injured players, coupled with a great display by Bourne, resulted in a narrow loss, 4 – 7. However, undaunted, the team went on to train harder and work on their communication on the court, ready for the play-offs. The 7B’s also enjoyed success this year, competing against the best that CHSG, Manhood and Bourne could offer, a final league position of 3rd was just reward for their efforts.
A revised league format saw the top 2 teams from the Chichester League and the top 2 teams in the Bognor league meet in a ‘Grand Final’. The 7A’s met BRCC in their first match and confidently beat them 27 – 4. This boosted their confidence, ready for the re-match against Bourne in the finals. This time they would not make the same mistakes and, with a dominant display of defending and work around the shooting circle, they came through comfortable winners, 13 – 2.
The 8A’s met Felpham in the semi-final and won by a massive 38 – 0. This win showed the side’s outstanding strength in all areas of the court, combined with their fierce motivation to win. They then also met Bourne in the final and beat them convincingly 12 – 4.
These brilliant results were due to the commitment and training the girls have put in throughout the year. The dominance of the teams in the local area bodes well for the future. All 3 teams will now represent the West Sussex West at the Sussex County Schools Finals Tournaments to be held at the K2 Leisure Centre in Crawley on the 29th and 31st of March.
