Students prepared activities on a range of different fairy tales, which they then took responsibility for teaching to pupils from Parklands Primary School, working alongside the class teacher. All year groups were involved, from Reception to Year 6. Pupils in Key Stage 2 there started learning French as part of the primary curriculum in September 2006; Key Stage 1 pupils do not do a language, so our students taught them from scratch. Activities included songs, stories, board games and number work, and culminated in a performance in the Hall at the end of the morning during which each class had an opportunity to demonstrate what they had learned. Our students agreed it had been an excellent way to improve their own French and considered it to be a very positive experience:
“I really enjoyed the day … I actually picked up a few phrases I didn’t know and it helped me gain confidence speaking French.”
“We enjoyed being in charge.”
“The children really enjoyed it. It was really nice to see them smiling and laughing because it let you know they were enjoying it.”
“We taught them well because they were being taught by young people not adults.”
“It was excellent to know we could help these children learn; their energy was incredible… I would love to do it again.”

And the primary pupils?
“Très bien!”
“I enjoyed the family assembly – I loved watching the little ones sing in French” (Year 6 boy).
“I learned loads of excellent French and I think the students should be French teachers when they are old enough.”
“The fairy tale day was superb… The students were kind, helpful and excellent at French”.
