Year 10 ASDAN pupils recently visited the Westhampnett Household Waste Recycling Site as part of their work on ‘The Environment’. Jennifer Hake, Education Officer at Viridor Waste Management Ltd which oversees the site, challenged pupils to think about the range of products that can be recycled. She showed the facilities that exist for recycling a huge array of items over and above those dealt with by household refuse collection teams. Pupils found out, for example, that aluminium coating can be removed from CDs and DVDs and the remaining polycarbonate used to make reflective car lights.
The sheer quantity of non-recyclable waste at the Site was both impressive and depressing! Back in the classroom, Jennifer Hake led a lively discussion which prompted pupils to consider what simple changes they could make to their lifestyle both at home and at school in order to follow the ‘go green’ code: reduce, re-use and recycle.
