Congratulations to Rosie Eldridge 9 Sherborne who has been selected to represent London and the South East Girl Guides region on a service project to South Africa in August. She was the only guide from this area to get through the selection process, with the majority coming from Kent and London.
The purpose of Rosie's trip is to work in the Gods Golden Acre orphanage, for children orphaned through AIDS or HIV related illnesses. Rosie has been raising funds for her trip through fundraising and donations. She will be expected to work with the children and also to undertake any development work taking place while she is out there, such as building works or painting. She will also be delivering food parcels to local villages.
Aside from the time spent at the orphanage she will be taking a hot air balloon flight, going on a one day safari and visiting Johannesburg, Pietermaritzburg and Durban. So quite an experience.
In preparation for the trip Rosie has attended several residential weekends with her fellow travellers and has been learning about the culture, trying out some of the food and of course, learning about the orphans themselves and what to expect at the orphanage.
On her return she is expected to attend the next 'selection' camp to brief those selected for the 2010 trip and make presentations to the local guiding association.
Our very best wishes to Rosie as she prepares for her summer adventure.
