The PE department came back from the Christmas break to discover that the Year 11 Netball team had been confirmed as runners up in the West Sussex West Netball league. Year 9’s went one better in claiming the area title. Year 7 and 8 A teams have started positively in comprehensively beating Chichester High School for girls. Bishop Luffa is the only school to have entered both A and B teams in the area league and the B teams eagerly await their first match.
On the Hockey front the U14 boy’s team travelled to the West Sussex Championships in buoyant mood facing the best state and independent school teams in the County. The team made an impressive start by beating Hurstpierpoint 1- 0 in their opening game. This was followed up with a draw against Lancing College, two narrow loses to Chichester High School for boys and Seaford College and finally a great victory against St Andrews School from Worthing. In what was an extremely tight competition the boys were eventually confirmed as coming tournament runners up.
The next day the U16 boys travelled to Hurstpeirpoint for their West Sussex Tournament. Once again an excellent start saw the team beat Seaford College 4-2. A draw with the Boys High School and a further win against Lancing College meant that the tournament would be decided on a winner take all last game against Hurstpierpoint. A rather one sided score line of 0 – 5 was a rather flattering result for ‘Hurst’ and the team was left to reflect upon missed opportunities. Nether the less West Sussex runners up is still a notable achievement.
The U18 team started their County Cup competition against their nemesis from last year and County Cup finalists, Ardingly College. Knowing that this was a tough draw the team skippered by Ben Hodges (Yr 13) started well taking an early lead. Despite only having 1 sub, the team matched Ardingly’s physicality throughout and never really looked in any difficulty. 2 further goals in the 2nd half left the result beyond question and see the boys through to the quarter finals where they will meet either Chichester High School for Boys or Hurstpierpoint.
Regular league Basketball has not been played for many years here at Bishop Luffa. However, this year, 4 teams have benefitted from playing in the South Hampshire leagues. Facing much more experienced opposition the U16 and U14 Girls teams have adapted well and are looking to finish 3rd in their leagues. The U16 boys have been beaten only once, losing by a single point to Chichester High School or Boys they currently stand in 2nd place and wait to see who they will meet in the competition play-offs. Meanwhile the U14 boys have gone unbeaten and proudly top their league in their first season as a team.
The U14 team took their league experience into the West Sussex West area Tournament. Comprehensive wins against BRCC and Westergate saw the boys into the final against Chichester High school. The team tore into CHSB right from the start and a run of 4 unanswered baskets was enough to snuffle out the High Schools challenge. The tournament victory is the first time in many years that a Basketball team from Bishop Luffa has won this title. This magnificent victory bodes well for the forthcoming Year 10, Year 11 and girls tournaments in the coming weeks.
