Bishop Luffa entered two teams of Year 8 girls in the CyberFirst Girls Competition 2020 and we were very excited when one of the teams (Olivia Murphy, Zoe Smyth, Eva Perez Elliott and Isabel Fitch) made it to the semi-finals on Saturday 8th February hosted at NATS Southampton, in association with the National Cyber Security Centre (part of GCHQ).
The CyberFirst Girls campaign is aimed to encourage more young women into technology-based careers. Battling it out to qualify for the CyberFirst Grand Final, each group was tasked with a series of fun activities to test their cyber security knowledge and highlight some of the key skills required for a rewarding career in the industry. The games included Instagram ‘cryptography’ and domino ‘coding’.
11,864 girls nationwide took part in the initial competition (2,996 teams from 754 schools) and in the Semi finals there were 156 teams, only 10 teams go into the next Grand Final stage. Although our team did not make it to the finals, all team members really enjoyed the day and the run up to the competition working together.
