Florence Alexander, a former pupil at Bishop Luffa School recently rowed for Cambridge University in the Oxford-Cambridge annual women’s boat race. This was the lightweight category, rather than the more well-publicised Open-weight category, but the training, skills and dedication to the sport is just the same as for the open weights.
The race took place on Sunday 15th March on the Thames. It is the same course as used for the open weights, but it was the first year that the women’s lightweight race took place there - it was previously held at Henley over a course that is only 1/3 the distance, and without significant currents and tides. It was a very exciting race with Oxford ahead for the first half, but Cambridge came back to win by a large margin of six lengths
Florence grew up in Runcton and attended Bishop Luffa School (2009 - 2016). She is a 4th year medical student at Cambridge University, (Sidney Sussex College).
