Two classes Year 11 students were recently privileged to have a visit from Idris Newab, the Imam of Worthing Mosque, in order to assist us with our ongoing GCSE Religious Studies course which includes a focus on the Islamic religion. It was amazing to see Idris’ skill of being a ‘hafiz’, knowing the Qur’an word for word, and the dedication in his beliefs and practices. We were able to ask questions that would have been harder to explore in lessons due to the Muslim religion being one in which many Muslims will have more depth and understanding due to it so significantly influencing their everyday lives. Life and death, euthanasia, Islamophobia and pilgrimage were only a few of the topics which we raised and were able to speak about in depth and discuss separate opinions on. We enriched our debating skills as well as seeing and listening to other viewpoints than our own. The opportunity proved to be extremely enjoyable, rewarding and helpful. Everyone agreed that it would be something that we would remember for a long time and we look forward to further sessions like these in the future.
