This week our Year 12 Computer Science students visited the National Oceanography Centre in Southampton. The tour involved an introduction to the history of British oceanography and an overview of how they conduct research. The students met Dr Catherine Harris from their Marine Autonomous and Robotic Systems Group. Dr Catherine Harris talked about their work with autonomous and remotely operated vehicles that oceanographers use for exploring the ocean.
It was a great visit and really interesting for the students to find out potential future careers in the field of Computer Science and Physics.
Joey Johnston (12Burrows) said, “I enjoyed seeing all the technology, including the famous Boaty McBoatface and learning the role of Computer Science in this kind of research.”
For those interested, the National Oceanography Centre open the doors to the public, the 2018 Open Day will be held on Saturday 9 June, click here for more information.
