Core Mathematics

Contact Teacher: Mrs H Kettle, Head of Mathematics

The Core Mathematics course is taught throughout years 12 and 13. Students receive 2.5 teaching hours per week. There is a heavy emphasis on the real world applications of mathematics and on problem solving. Students will develop their analytical and critical thinking skills, as well as developing their core mathematical proficiency which will facilitate the mathematical elements of their other subjects. This Level 3 qualification carries the same number of UCAS points as an AS level.

The two year course is largely taught through problem solving. Classes are varied, comprising investigations, class discussions and the use of IT resources for mathematical modelling.

At the end of Year 13 students will be examined through two papers. The first examines compulsory core content including data analysis, financial maths and modelling and estimation. The second paper includes the compulsory element of critical analysis, with the rest of the second paper assessing the optional topics of statistics and probability, critical path analysis or graphical methods.

Students have access to a course textbook in school. We also provide a workbook which the students are able to use for exam preparation in both Years 12 and 13.
