Information for Year 9 Students
Dear Year 9 Student,
Years 10 and 11 are an exciting time when you study for your first public exams. At Bishop Luffa, most students take nine GCSEs.
We offer a wide range of courses to help you choose subjects that interest and challenge you. Reading about each course will help you understand what is involved and make the right choices.
Choosing your subjects
Every student at Bishop Luffa will study the following subjects:
-
English and English Literature (GCSEs)
-
Mathematics (GCSE)
-
Combined Science (2 GCSEs)
-
Religious Studies (GCSE)
-
Physical Education (Core non-examined)
-
PSHE (Personal, Social, Health and Economic education)

To take Triple Science, you must have a current grade of 4M.
Some students may be invited to study a Free-Standing Maths Qualification (FSMQ) alongside GCSE Maths. This is outside the normal curriculum, does not use an option, and helps extend your maths skills. More details will be given by the Maths department.
You will receive guidance to help you make the right option choices.
Next steps
- Talk with your parents / carers, tutor / Head of House, and subject teachers
- Use Unifrog to explore subjects and complete your profile
- Choose subjects which you enjoy, are good at, and that fit your goals
- Make your own choices, not based on friends
A wide range of courses are available and full infomation is here, on the school website. Consider how each course is assessed (final exams or ongoing coursework) and what suits you best. These choices are important and hard to change later, so take time to think carefully.
