King House was created in 1993 and is named after Bishop Henry King, who was Bishop of Chichester from 1642 to 1646. When Chichester was captured by the Parliamentarians, Bishop King’s estates were confiscated and his library sold. He lived in Buckinghamshire until the restoration of the monarchy in 1660. When he returned to Chichester, he established a restoration fund to repair the cathedral and Bishop’s Palace. He died in 1669 and was buried in the Cathedral.

What is King House like?

King House motto is ‘Success through practice’. Pupils in King House pride themselves in always striving to be the best.  King House Charities are St Jerome’s Orphanage in Kenya and Breast Cancer Care.

King House Prayer

Dear Lord,

Thank you for having us together in King House.

We ask You to help us give the best of ourselves while we are here,

And that You use the unity of our house to further your purpose in the world.

Keep us ever mindful of the suffering we can bring an end to,

That we might all become citizens of a kinder, more just world,

And lead us to a greater knowledge of Your love.

Amen

A REVIEW OF King House 2024-2025

YEAR 7 – Mr Robinson

As we come to the end of a successful Year 7, I am delighted to report that the King tutor group have settled in fabulously to secondary school life. They have quickly found their way around the school, adapted well to new routines, and built strong new friendships along the way.

The group have shown great enthusiasm and team spirit, taking part in a range of inter-house activities. A particular highlight was their impressive performance in House Drama, where they were proud winners—demonstrating creativity, collaboration, and confidence.

Another memorable moment from this year was our fantastic residential trip to the Isle of Wight. The pupils threw themselves into every activity, making many wonderful memories together. A special mention goes to their triumph in the laser tag competition!

It has been a pleasure to see how much they have grown over the course of the year, both personally and as a group. I wish them all a restful and enjoyable summer holiday and look forward to seeing them refreshed and ready for the challenges and opportunities of Year 8.

YEAR 8 – Mr Healy

8 King have had a great year. Every morning begins with energy, laughter, and smiles—a great way to start our day.

This year has brought challenges, and plenty of change, but 8 King has faced it all with enthusiasm and heart. They've embraced the opportunities of mixing classes with 8 Otter, making new friends and taking every opportunity to get involved.

Beyond the school walls, so many have shown their talents in competitions, local and national. Even within our classroom, we explored the world, from France to Nepal!

Whether on the stage in the winning House Drama production, victory in Interhouse Dance, or giving they're all in Interhouse Sports, they've showed up for each other and for our house. I am very proud of the young people they are.

YEAR 9 – Mr Hill

What a brilliant year it’s been for 9King! From start to finish, this group has brought energy, enthusiasm and a strong sense of community to everything they've done.

One of our standout achievements this year was being crowned House Drama champions, with several students stepping up to take on key roles both on stage and behind the scenes. Their creativity and commitment truly shone, and it was a proud moment for all of us. We also saw strong performances in inter house competitions, with 9King students throwing themselves into everything, always giving their best, with typical determination and team spirit. A number of students also took part in LAMDA, showing confidence and skill in performance and public speaking.

Our bowling trip was another highlight, a fun and well-deserved chance to celebrate as a group. It was great to see everyone relaxed, laughing, and enjoying each other’s company outside of the classroom.

A real credit to the form was the way many students stepped up to support the Spanish exchange students, acting as guides, and friendly faces during their visit. Their maturity and kindness made a big impression and reflected the welcoming spirit we value in 9King.

This year also marked a big step forward with the Key Stage 4 options process. It’s been a pleasure to see the maturity with which students approached these important decisions, a real sign of the growth and development that’s taken place across the year.

It’s been a privilege to watch 9King continue to grow, support one another, and rise to every challenge.

YEAR 10 – Mr Allman

10 King have had another busy year, working hard on their KS4 courses and building for future success, undertaking mock exams and careers interviews in preparation for Post-16 life! Some students visited Chichester college to experience life at the college and complete some course taster sessions and all students dipped their toe into the world of work as we completed our work experience week earlier in the year. Enterprise day was a great way for the students to flex their entrepreneurship skills, and build experience and interest in the wider world of work.

10 King students have continued to set a great example to the younger members of the house, taking a full part in Inter house games and competitions throughout the year, they remain a dedicated and competitive bunch of students with sporting prowess! Some students have been further afield literally! Taking part in the Duke of Edinburgh expedition. This year we have also had the pleasure of seeing those students who are in La Diva choir, develop their singing with expert tuition, opening up amazing opportunities for them to perform both at home and abroad!

10 King are a group of Individuals who have set their sights on success both in and out of school, we know that they will be more than ready to take on the challenge of Year 11 which lies ahead and we look forward to walking with them on their journey.

YEAR 11 – Miss Bracher

What a year it’s been for 11 King! They’ve worked incredibly hard in preparation for their GCSEs, showing real dedication and determination throughout. It’s been an absolute pleasure to be their tutor – they’ve been a fantastic group, full of personality, resilience, and support for one another. I’m truly going to miss seeing them each day, but I’m also excited to see where the next chapter takes them and look forward to welcoming some back into the Sixth Form. They ended their Year 11 journey in style with a wonderful prom, a well-deserved celebration of all they’ve achieved. I wish each and every one of them the success they’ve worked so hard for.

YEAR 12 – Mr Clarke

It’s been a marvelous start to Sixth Form life for the new 12 King, and I’ve enjoyed immensely my journey with them so far. Here are some of our highlights from a magical 24/25 school year:

We begin in September 2024, when the brand new 12 King stepped into their Sixth Form shoes for the first time, full of energy, fun, light-hearted banter, and above all a genuine and fierce respect for the rules and expectations of the Sixth Form. In fact, they were SO good at adjusting to the rules, that they were even commended by Sixth Form leadership for being perfect at a fire drill! All this to say, 12 King set their stall out brilliantly at the beginning of the new school year.

Then came the fun, the adventure, the challenge, and the achievement of the French residential to Rue and Berck-sur-Mer. Three terrific days of exploring, team-building activities, and learning to live mostly off the grid. We learned about the history of the Chateau where we stayed, about survival techniques and how to start fires, learned a hilarious game called “blind trailing”, and even played a humongous game of Manhunt in the grounds of the Chateau! Capped off by a lovely visit to the seaside and some incredible coffee and pastries, it was a great way to let off some steam, build bonds, make memories, and have some brilliant fun every step of the way.

Back at school, the fast-paced and packed Sixth Form life brought more and more great opportunities for 12 King, and they wasted no time in grabbing life with both hands! We Katy, Elisa, Georgia, and Liv signing up for Reading Ambassadors, volunteers left, right, and centre for Open Evening, lots of brilliant ideas buzzing around for the Fashion Show, fundraising ideas, all kinds of things. In fact, this is one area where 12 King absolutely outdid themselves: whilst fundraising for the Tanzania trip, we had bake sales, sponsored hikes, people running up and down the Trundle at Goodwood, and even a charity concert going on! A huge well done to Monty, Willow, Charlotte, Ollie, and Lara for everything they put into fundraising for their Tanzania adventure – we heard from the group a number of times during the trip and it sounded absolutely incredible.

And speaking of incredible trips, another huge well done is due to Charlie for his taking part in the Duke of Edinburgh Gold expedition in the Lake District! The Duke of Edinburgh Award is a huge part of the fabric of Bishop Luffa life, and students can take Bronze, Silver, and Gold with us at different age groups across their time at school. For Charlie and the 14 other students who took Gold this year, they really have conquered their final peak! 5 nights away with your entire life on your back is no small task, and they met the challenge admirably.

And last, but by no means least, I turn to the final massive achievement for King House this year, courtesy of Asha, Liv, and their team. “Kes” is the story of Billy, a Yorkshire boy, growing up in the 1960s. Coal mining is the dominant employment in the area, home and school are places full of shouting, bullying, and Billy is so disillusioned with what lies ahead after finishing school that he promises himself nothing could ever make him work in the mines. From Billy’s resolve not to become a miner is born an unlikely but steadfast friendship with a kestrel (the title character). This was the story chosen by Asha and Liv as the King House entry for the 2025 House Drama competition, and after a brilliantly well-managed run of auditions, rehearsals, practice performances, and live shows, King House were declared WINNERS of House Drama 2025! A huge debt of thanks is due to Asha and Liv for their work, and for the whole cast for taking part so brilliantly throughout.

Finally, I owe some thanks of my own. The maiden year of my career as a Sixth Form tutor is over, and my tutor group have made it a busy, fun, purposeful, achievement-packed dream come true. To my Captains – Charlie, Liv, Elisa, and Georgia – thanks for taking on so much additional responsibility and helping to lead our form and our House forward this year. It’s been lovely working with you all. To the Tanzania crew – Monty, Willow, Charlotte, Ollie, and Lara – your drive and enthusiasm from fundraising all the way through to 32 hours travelling there and back is commendable. To Charlie and the Gold DoE team – your spirit, tenacity, and resolve are an inspiration. To the House Drama directors, Asha and Liv, to take command of a whole show from auditioning through to a triumphant House Drama final shows organisational skills, leadership, passion, and determination to which we may all aspire. And last, but certainly not least, to the whole of 12 King: thanks for a genuinely special year. I can’t wait to do it all again in Year 13!
