With the 80th anniversary of D-Day approaching, a group of Year 9 students took a trip to the D-Day Story Museum in Portsmouth to help grow their understanding of Operation Overlord. The museum helped students understand the monumental effort that was the Normandy landings by walking them through the extensive planning and build up to the invasion of Normandy, sharing the experiences of the allied forces on the beaches and discussing the impact that D-Day had in bringing the Second World War to a conclusion. The students were curious, excellently behaved and their reflections on why D-Day was so crucial were thoughtful. Highlights included the 83-metre-long Overlord Embroidery and the excellently restored LCT-7074, the last surviving Landing Craft Tank from D-Day. As a School we will consider the significance of D-Day during registration time in the first week back after half term, which coincides with the 80th anniversary of this hugely significant event.
