Year 8 had a fantastic trip to Marwell Zoo on the 19th and 21st September. Each half of the year traveled by coach and went around the zoo with their science class and science teachers. The day also included a talk to each class by a member of the staff at the zoo about the adaptations of some animals to their habitat, particularly the giraffe. Students were amazed at the size of the bones in a giraffe's neck.
The students completed work booklets on the adaptations of other animals in the zoo, but unfortunately some of these got a little wet with the sudden downpours of rain! This by no means dampened the spirits and the students saw many animals up close who were posing for the many photos that were taken. The students can now enter these for an animal photo competition.
These photos will also be used in the next topic to be studied in science, when ‘Adapting to Change’ is covered in the Genes chapter of the KS3 course.
A final thank you needs to go to the science staff, who encouraged the students and answered many questions on the day. The students had a great time and loved their time at Marwell Zoo.
