Gwen Sargent (9Burrows) and Johnny Sargent (8Burrows) have embarked on their sailing Winter training programme following a busy Summer.
Gwen started the Summer with the Tasar World Championships at Hayling Island Sailing Club. She helmed with her Dad Matt as crew. 67 boats took part from seven countries including Japan, New Zealand, the USA and Australia. After five days of hard racing Gwen was crowned Junior World Champion, finishing 46th overall. Next up was the 2000 National Championship at Tenby Sailing Club in Wales. Again Gwen helmed with Matt as her crew in a fleet of 53 boats. Five days of intense competition ended with Gwen and Matt in 10th place, winning 1st Junior Helm, and 1st Family Champion.
Johnny’s summer started with the Optimist UK National Championships after which he headed off to Howth near Dublin for the Irish Nationals. Johnny raced for the GBR Team and finished 6th. He also finished 2nd overall in the Optimist Southern Travellers Series out of 168. Johnny also enjoyed helming a 470 which is an adult Olympic class.
The Optimist selection series continued with the Late Summer Championship at Draycote Water Sailing Club and the End of Seasons Championship at Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy. Both Gwen and Johnny raced well to finish on the same score. Johnny had the best individual result in the Series and was placed 28th to Gwen’s 29th in the national rankings.
Gwen will continue to train in her Optimist this Winter while also continuing to helm the Tasar and 2000. Johnny is training in the Optimist National Boys squad. Congratulations to them both.
