On Wednesday 13th March the Year 8 and Year 9 Bishop Luffa Boys Rugby teams ventured to a windy and grey Brighton RFC for the County Cup finals. Both teams had only lost one game leading into this climactic event, with the Year 8s winning against Downlands and St Oscar Romero to reach the final. Whilst the Year 9s beat a very physical Weald team in the final play to make it to the big dance.
The Year 8s were up first against a very well organised Kings School, Brighton, who came out of the blocks fast and led by two tries in the first few minutes. However, as the game built into its flow the team found their rhythm and continuously stretched their opponents. Huge performances by the whole team led to the Year 8s winning the plate final 25-20.
The Year 9s braved the wind and rain during their game against a physical opponent Dorothy Stringer, Brighton. From the off the team knew they would need to work hard and front up against their ‘strong’ opposite numbers. The game flowed well with Luffa showing strength and width in attack. However, the raw power of their opponents was the eventual deciding force with Dorothy Stringer winning 41-15.
A huge success for both teams and an amazing experience for all those involved. Moreover, thank you to all of the local businesses who have been instrumental in supporting the school’s rugby provision: Obtrada, Goodwood, Chichester Shutters, NJS, Historic Hotels and EVINOX Energy.
