Key Stage 3

Support Dept 300x171Our Support department offers appropriate support to students with Special Educational Needs, (SEND). This support reflects the graduated approach as stated in the 2014 Code of Practice.

Social Skills groups are also offered as is early morning reading, touch typing and a daily after school homework club.

As part of a wider school initiative, the Learning Mentor is based in the Support Department to work with very specific needs of Year 7 students and to liaise with primary schools to ease the transition process.

Key Stage 4

Apart from ongoing in class support, Support offers three subjects within the option blocks. The following is information regarding each option.

COPE (Certificate of Personal Effectiveness)

This is a two year alternative to a traditional GCSE. The qualification is approved by the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority as a full GCSE equivalent qualification: level 2 is equivalent to a Grade B GCSE 946 points) and Level 1 to a Grade E/F (25 points).

At the same time as working on a wide range of topics, students also develop effectiveness in six Key Skills : working with others, improving learning and performance, problem solving and the skills of research, discussion and presentation.

Support DepartmentVision 2 Learn

This offers an inline Learning Tool and teacher support to develop skills in English and Maths and work towards the Level 2 Functional Skills qualification.

College

This option is for specific students to spend one day a week at Chichester College to study a vocational course and to gain a Level 1 qualification. Time is allocated in school to work on the theoretical aspect of the college course and to catch up with other work. Learning Support has a strong link with the college and a staff member supports the students whilst they are in college.
