From Luffa to Hogwarts…

The annual Film Studies and Media Studies department trip to the Warner Bros. Harry Potter Studio Tour in July was another resounding success. Our Year 10 Media and Year 12 Film & Media students had the chance to experience an interactive “Script to Screen” workshop in which they learned about the process of bringing a story to the big screen via writing, producing, shooting, special effects, set design and make up. Students had the chance to see genuine models, prosthetics and props from the Harry Potter films. Afterwards, we walked through the real sets and workspaces from the franchise. Students saw just how many thousands of people, skills and jobs it takes to make a film and we believe that this trip has made our learners realise that their hobbies, interests, talents and obsessions can transfer seamlessly into our country’s hugely profitable and successful film and creative industries.

Here’s more from Grace Livings (12Otter)

“Year 12 and 10 had the opportunity to go to Warner Brother Studios and visit the magic of the wizarding world of Harry Potter, taking a tour of the iconic sets and unravelling what it took to bring the world-renowned Harry Potter saga to the big screens. Arguably the best highlight of the trip would have to have been stepping into the magic Platform 9 ¾ set and seeing the classic trolley embedded into the wall and of course boarding the Hogwarts Express that transports you into your own journey to the school of witchcraft and wizardry. This has taught me that not everything you see on set is real and is in fact just a cinematic illusion. For example, who would've thought that Harry’s luggage was made out of polystyrene? This is all thanks to the set designers that create a world full of realism and verisimilitude- details that seem true to real life, all ways in which students can incorporate these ideas in their own coursework going forward.”
