Wild Reading

Mondays are Murder…? This spring Mr Eames from the English Dept and Mx Thomas from the Library took 23 students from Year 7, 8 and 10 on a wild readers trip to find out…

Reading with confidence opens the door to learning well across the whole curriculum. Residentials offer a fresh page. Crisp and new, potential and possibility, you can do anything, be anything, live life in all its fullness. Pair the two together to form Bishop Luffa’s Wild Readers Trip this year on the CYE Barge in Bosham.

Two days, a whistle stop adventure of reading a whole book: Mondays are Murder (see what I did there) headtorches at the ready for a spot of reading whilst tunnelling; CYE have the second longest man-made tunnel in Europe, a tranquil moment of reading, resting in your kayak on the water…followed by the next chapter of the book whilst sailing a longboat.

After dinner a beach walk in the gloaming with the latest instalment of the book read aloud by a student to the group ending with campfire marshmallow toasting, complete with a session of whole group reading aloud to find out whodunnit…. we finished the book! Every student completed a feedback postcard at the end of the trip…here are a few of our students’ thoughts on wild reading;

“I enjoyed the trip and it helped involve me in the book. The Characters were doing activities outside like us….the staff members reading was good and fun and involved me in the story so much more”
“Just like the characters in the book when arriving on the island I was wet and cold..”
“It was a great choice to choose this book for our residential as it relates with the story, when we were taking part in the activities it was relaxing to have a little read and a check in on what’s happening in the story”
“I’ve made new friends on this trip. Enjoyed being read to and reading to others…this trip has allowed me to open myself up to make new friends and has also made me realise how fun reading was”

It was an enjoyable couple of days for all involved including huge achievements such as facing fears, making new friends, reading a whole book but most importantly; igniting a spark for a new found love of reading.
