A fantastic weekend of Music, Dance & Speech

After a busy few days at the end of last week with LAMDA exams at the school, a number of our students this weekend competed in the Chichester Festival for Music, Dance and Speech 2022 at the Chichester Festival Theatre.

Iian Dunderdale (13Wilson), Alfie Ayling (13Wilson), Grace Thompson (12Wilson), Evelina Rudasa (9Wilson), Ella Watkins (9Ridgeway), Katie Blamire (9Ridgeway), Keturah Peirson (9Burrows), Eva Jones (8Story), Niall Cook (8Story), Arabella Roebuck (8Buyrrows), Evie Castle (8King), Ellie Crawley (8King), Ella Hatch (8Sherborne), Stanley Wilkes (8Burrows) and Alexander Solly (8Ridgeway) competed against students from all over West Sussex and Hampshire and further afield.

All the students did exceptionally well, with some receiving the following awards:

  • Stanley Wilkes won the Richard Plowman Cup for public speaking with a speech Stanley had written on the environment.
  • Eva Jones won the Speech and Drama Cup (Years 7, 8 & 9) for her prose performance of The Subtle Knife by Philip Pullman, with Ella Hatch taking second place for her performance of Private Peaceful by Michael Morpurgo.
  • Evelina Rudasa won the Sir Eric Jansz Poetry Prize Cup for her recitation of The Marrog by R C Scriven, with Eva Jones taking second place and Alexander Solly taking third place for the same poem.
  • Grace Thompson won the Susan Brand Cup for her recitation of Colonel Fazackerley by Charles Causeley.
  • Iian Dunderdale performed Ozymadias by Percy Bysshe Shelley and War of the Worlds by H G Wells, winning a gold medal for each.
  • Alfie Ayling performed About a Goth by Tom Wells winning the Beale Memorial Cup and was awarded a gold medal for Othello by William Shakespeare.
  • Ella Watkins and Katie Blamire performed a scene together from Fossils by Manuel Aston and were awarded third place.
  • Keturah Peirson won the Leslie Evershed-Martin Rose Bowl for the Intermediate Championship which involves performing a piece of verse, a monologue and some sight-reading.

This Chichester Festival for Music, Dance and Speech is now in its 67th year and is open to all ages and abilities and welcome new competitors each year from all over the south of England. This annual event in Chichester runs from early Feb until mid March with sections in Brass, Dance, Guitars, Junior Singing, Musical Theatre, Orchestra/Bands, Pianoforte, Recorders, Speech & Drama Strings, Woodwind culminating in a final ‘Festival Concert’ on Saturday 19th March at 3.00pm in the Minerva Theatre at Chichester Festival Theatre. Tickets will be available through CFT box office for those interested in attending the festival concert.
