Students in KS4 Textiles were joined by apprentices Katie Hood and Rosie Smith from the Rolls Royce plant in Goodwood. This was a fascinating introduction into apprenticeships within the company. The students learnt about the history of Rolls Royce and were brought up-to-date with the emerging new technologies being developed within the company. Our students learnt about the many varied positions within Rolls Royce and alternative routes through education and training. They experienced the role that textiles plays within the company and were able to touch and feel the different swatches of material and intricate wooden veneers. The students were very impressed with the opportunities that they could have if they applied for the apprenticeship scheme, starting as soon as they finish GCSEs on a £16K salary and receiving training equivalent of GCSE and A level, with the potential to continue to degree level.
The delivery of the presentation was friendly, relaxed and inspiring. We were encouraged to ask questions throughout; Katie and Rosie were extremely knowledgeable as they had first-hand experience of the apprenticeship. It was a joy to see two young business women at the top of their game inspiring the next generation of women.
Some of our Year 10 students shared their thoughts on the event. Summer said, "For me it was a really helpful experience. It helped me discover the choices I have after GCSEs. The presentation was very informative, and helped me realize the benefits of apprenticeships. Having people who had been in the apprenticeship also helped because you could ask them questions about their experience."
Sophia also found the event helpful, "I really enjoyed the presentation and it has shown me how apprenticeships can be a great alternative to other education," and Nicola said "I really enjoyed learning about how about all the different types of Rolls Royce apprenticeships for 16 year olds who have finished their GCSE and what goes on in the textiles side of Rolls Royce."
