News from the Computer Science Department

This year we have had record attendance to the clubs run by Computer Science staff (and Sixth Formers). For the list of clubs click here. Many of the clubs are just for fun, but there is a competitive element to many, be it Chess or VEX Robotics or our Girls Code clubs (judging will take place for the latest in house competition this Friday for the girls).

CyberCenturion VIII – this year we entered our first team, Will Lynas (13Otter) and Leo Stirzaker (13Ridgeway), into CyberCenturion, a national cyber education initiative in the UK and UK overseas territories. The program is designed to excite, educate and motivate students to pursue further education and careers in STEM and cybersecurity, which helps to build a diverse talent pool to supply the UK’s workforce needs. Leo and Will currently run our Cyber Club which takes place on Tuesdays; we have some keen Year 11s which I know will take over once Will and Leo leave us to head off to university.

Perse Coding Team Challenge - earlier on this term we entered four teams to compete for the Braben Cup. This competition for UK secondary schools pits teams of students in Years 7 to 11 against each other in a timed automated coding challenges across two rounds. Well done to all those entered. This is a fiercely competitive challenge where it was fantastic to see our older more experienced coders supporting our younger students who had little experience of these kind of challenges before they teamed up for practice.

Young Coders Competition 2022 - we have a new club on Tuesdays where Year 7s and 8s are working on their entries in Scratch. This year's theme is My World, Our Planet and is a national competition for Year 7s and 8s. It is not too late to take part, if you like the sound of creating game that encourages children to take care of natural resources and improve the environment, come along on Tuesday.

In January Hannah Carr (9Sherborne), Hannah Day (9Ridgeway), Esther Sutton (9Ridgeway) and Richard Popovitch (7Story) won prizes for being winners in the Scratch Halloween Competition. In February, Guy Drew (11Otter) found out he had won a prize for completing the Cyber Advent Calendar (a national competition with 24 different cyber Christmas themed challenges). Finally, well done to Amelie Cannon (8Ridgeway) for her prize winning entry to the Climate change competition. These are all national competitions run by DressCode, and our students have done very well!

Last month was busy for our Digital Leaders, they had a great time trying out new technology at the Digital Leaders’ Conference hosted by the Stroud School, and then had another fantastic day exploring and learning at the Bett Show in London, they have returned to school with lots of creative ideas to share.
